Milman, Henry Hart
(1791-1868)
   Born in London, the son of a physician, and educated at Eton College, he graduated M.A. from Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1816. He was awarded a doctor of divinity degree in 1849 and was made a fellow of Brasenose. He won the Newdigate prize in 1812 for his poem "Apollo" and in 1816 the chancellor's prize for his essay "A Comparative Estimate of Sculpture and Painting." From 1821 to 1831 he was professor of poetry at Oxford, then rector of St. Margaret's, Westminster, and canon of Westminster, and was made dean of St. Paul's in 1849. He was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral. A monument was erected in the south aisle of the choir. He wrote some major books on history and edited Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1838). Some of his poetry publications: Ode on the Arrival of the Potentates in Oxford, 1814. "The Crucifixion," "The Holy Field," "Where the Wicked Cease from Troubling."
